Gardening, My Diary

Beginning again

IMG-20180918-WA0002How do you all feel after the holidays? In a way it’s a bit like New Year isn’t it? We’ve had a rest, or fun, or learnt things and we’ve come back NEW to start our lives all over again.

Did you miss anything? What’s the first thing you look at after you turn the keys in the lock?

Maybe your post? Some good , some bad. No more postcards from friends, we’ve done all that on Instagram. What then? Bills? Invoices? The best things are your subscription magazines  and your packages from Amazon. I got a magazine from the R.H.S. about plants and flowers and a book on practical Botany for gardeners.

So, after your mail, maybe it’s a quick look round the house…I like the look of my OWN bed, I’ll sleep well tonight!

Then, for me, it’s the garden. Overgrown but happy to see me.

And after you have done your Lord /Lady of the manor act, surveying your property, it’s time to start planning your new lifestyle, to maintain your toned ,tanned new body! And to keep on with all the exciting new things you came across during your time off.

My Diary

After the holidays

Well, as we say, “it’s all over bar the shouting”, but in my case, maybe it should be “the shouting’s over”.

noise cancelling headphonesIt has become such a NOISY world; it seems as if people are afraid to be alone with their own silence. Once upon a time we bought devices to plug into ,or over our ears to listen to music ; now we have to buy devices to cover our ears to eliminate the relentless background noise around us every day, everywhere.

As far as I know, “quiet carriages” have not yet got a toehold in Italian railway networks, and I doubt they ever will.

Teaching English

dronefotogrammetria-840x480Yes, it’s got a whole load of meanings, not just male bees or bombs-on-presidents!

I used to tease my uni students by “droning” on like them…finishing with “amen” just to make them realise, with a laugh, how boring they were. Drone means to speak in a flat, boring, way, losing your listeners’ interest on the way!

Teaching English

Pronunciation problems

I always find it very embarrassing when I tell my students that they need to speak well. The reason? I’ve been in Italy for a long ,long time and I still speak like Stan Laurel!

But the point is this: People can understand me because Italian is a pretty straightforward language to speak, whereas if you don’t get English pronunciation right, you’ll be misunderstood, AND, what is worse, you’ll have difficulty understanding others.

What I’d like to do

I’d like to help people learn English. I have  very long experience teaching English and the one thing that stands out in my mind is this. After the first lesson my students say to me, “no one ever told me that” so I do think I could help YOU too
