Head over heels in love

How a very ordinary day becomes extra- special. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time now….why am I so often really happy? I’ve got all kinds of aches and pains, I work hard, I’m getting old (well you are too), I’m nowhere near rich. Yet often I’m ridiculously happy. It’s waking up in the morning and the sun is out, it’s turning round in the garden and while you weren’t looking some incredibly beautiful new flower has appeared,or some plant which was doing badly has quietly moved itself and has found a place to call home and is flourishing. I think there are 3 components that make up my glee! 1) I now have an instagram feed (an.ne1207) which compels me to look closely and well for my daily feed; no pic today? What about a bit of gravel path then? Or the Duomo yet again from a different angle? 2) I’m getting older and I realise that life is not infinite. How many more times will I be going on holiday? How many more times will your child or grandchild be 3 years old? This is a serious aid to deep enjoyment and is worth pondering. When I was a child we sang a hymn at school at Assembly in the mornings, it included the line”Live each day as t’were thy last” and I slowed down 3) You need to have been seriously ill, to have recovered and grateful for still being here.

I believe the first thing to do is to develop or refine all your senses. When I asked the enologist about how he perceived all those interesting perfumes in a glass containing the same wine as mine he said we must refine our noses by smelling everything, all the smells around us clearly not all good. So I think you need to do that with all your senses, you know when you’re in love you don’t even have to try. So my suggestion is this: fall head over heels in love with your own life.
